Music Ministry Opportunities
The music ministry at the Basilica of St. Joseph is dedicated to enriching our worship experience through music. The Basilica of St. Joseph offers many opportunities to raise your voice in thanks and praise to God. Each group is committed to providing quality music deeply rooted in prayer. Instrumentalists and vocalists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate so that our praying community may grow closer to God and one another. We are proud of our music program and we are eager for you to join us!
We are now recruiting for all groups within the music ministry. We really want to see lots of new faces, so come and give us a try! Rehearsals begin in late August for most groups, but are open to newcomers year round. Please take some time to read about our musical groups to see which may be the best fit for you.
Basilica Choir
The Basilica Choir meets weekly September-May on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Music is selected from classical to contemporary hymns that are challenging and appropriate for the liturgy. This Choir sings at the 9:00 Mass on Sunday mornings in the loft with the Organ. The choir does not sing the fourth Sunday of the Month. The Basilica choir also provides music for many other special liturgies (Holy Days, Christmas Eve, Easter Vigil etc….) throughout the year.
Handbell Choir
Our church has had an active bell choir for over 20 years. The bells add to the beauty of the liturgy and enhance our prayer. Handbell solo arrangements are prepared for Mass and the bells are added to the hymns sung by the Basilica Choir. The handbell choir plays during special services, including Christmas Eve and Easter Vigil. New members are always welcome.
Please feel free to contact the director or a current choir member.
Contemporary I
This group leads the music at the 11:00 Mass on the second Sunday of the month and the 9:00 Mass on the fourth Sunday of the Month. The group consists of guitars, acoustic string bass, flute, violin and piano.
Resurrection Choir
The choir provides music for the funeral liturgies at St. Joseph Parish. Funerals are scheduled at 11:00 Monday-Friday and 10:00 on Saturdays. This choir does not have a regularly scheduled rehearsal. The members gather at 10:30 to prepare for the Mass. Members of this choir attend when it works in their schedules. We have many members so we always have a good group of singers.
One Voice Choir
The choir rehearses twice a month on Thursday evenings 7:00-8:30 and sings at the 4:00 or 11:00 Mass times twice a month. Music is selected from classical to contemporary hymns that are challenging and appropriate for the liturgy. One Voice Choir sings with the piano and guitar accompaniment.
Solo instruments are also included in the instrumentation.
St. Joseph Middle School Choir
The St. Joseph Middle School Choir (6th-8th grade) rehearses Mondays from 2:45-3:30 from August-May. The director chooses music that challenges the choir to grow in technique and musical development. The choir sings at the 11:30 Mass once a month and also at a Youth Mass sponsored by the St. Joseph Youth Group (W.O.W.) once a month. The students that attend St. Joseph School will sing at school Masses throughout the school year.
St. Joseph Children's Choir
This choir is for children in 2nd through 5th grades and offers the opportunity for children to participate in worship. This is an important building block in their faith life and church membership. The choir rehearses on Mondays at 2:45-3:30 from August-May. The director chooses music that is appropriate to the liturgy and develops the voice of a young singer. The choir sings at the 11:30 Mass once a month and also for St. Joseph school liturgies throughout the year.
Instrumentalists
Instrumentalists are needed to support the basic singer/accompanist setting. Bass guitars, drums, strings and wind instruments are a great addition to the liturgy, especially during larger Mass celebrations. We are always looking for quality instrumentalists who are willing to share their gifts with the parish. Contact Debbie Jones for more information.
Cantor/Accompanist
Cantors and accompanists are needed for weekend Masses and also for weddings and funerals.
Cantors are singers that lead the congregation in hymns. They also proclaim certain parts of the Mass such as the Psalm and Gospel acclamation.
Accompanists are pianists, organists or guitarists that support the singers and congregation with accompanying music. They provide introductions to the hymns and Mass settings in addition to providing solo instrumental music if neccessary.
If you are interested in serving as an accompanist or cantor, please contact our office for more information.
